History.....
Dating back to 831 AD, Murcia’s culture and architecture still has
traces of Moorish, Medieval Christian and Baroque influences.
The
magnificent 14th century Cathedral with its 23 different chapels is the
city’s “must see” site, although examples of the city’s
splendid architecture appear on almost every street corner. The
wonderful facades of the 18th century Bishops Palace, the Convent Church
of Santa Aria and the Church of San Miguel, with its beautiful coloured
altarpieces, are well worth visiting.
For
its shear scale and elegance the University building is one of the most
impressive in Spain. This building, and the 19th century Casino building
with its palatial interior, originate from a period when the city was
dominated by its wealthy cloth merchants and silversmiths. The
Romea Theatre and City Hall also originated from this period with both
having individual decorative features.
These
and many more magnificent buildings, as well as the numerous city museums
make a visit to Murcia a cultural pleasure.
