History.....

Dating back to the times of the conflict between the Carthaginians and the Romans, the city is steeped in over 2000 years of historical and archaeological interest.

Built around the port, reputed to have been funded by Hannibal, the city boasts fantastic examples of Byzantine and Punic walls.

The Castillo de la Conception Roman Theatre in the centre of the city, combined with the ancient castles, churches and archaeological museums provide evidence of the historical importance of this wonderful city.

Shopping.....

Shopping in Cartagena is an experience not to be missed. The serious shopper can find anything at the modern Parque Mediterraneo complex on the outskirts of the city.

The fantastic El Corte Inglés department store (Spain’s only one!) and international fashion houses such as Zara and Mango can be found in the city, together with a multitude of specialists shops spread throughout a city centre which is steeped in architectural interest.

Quality leather goods and shoes are a feature of this region, as are the regular street markets.

Entertainment and Festivals.....

The Gran Casino de Cartagena will provide an exhilarating experience for the serious excitement seeker.

The Port area boasts a modern marina with lots of restaurants and cafes combined with lots of historic relics to admire, including the worlds first submarine on display. The street markets, entertainers, cafes and bars spread around the narrow city centre streets, which are full of fascinating features, provide a varying experience on every visit.

Join the Carthaginians in their Easter celebration processions renowned throughout Spain and you will experience something special. Venture into the city during the second half of September and you will witness the re-enactment of the Carthaginian and Roman battles from a time around 210 BC.

The city is turned into an elaborate battlefield with 1000’s of the locals all dressed in period costumes taking part in the festival to celebrate the city’s past. Cartagena is a city with something for everyone!
